The PSOE socialist party in Málaga has criticised the “right and far right” for retaining symbols which it says are an attack on historical memory. Speaking during the event organized at the Peñón del Cuervo to commemorate La Desbandá 85 years ago, the party’s general secretary, Daniel Pérez, said it was a shame it was taking place in a political context of an alliance between the right and far right to maintain and even recover symbols which are an attack on historical memory. As an example, he pointed out that barely a month earlier Madrid council had returned the name ‘Crucero Baleares’ to a street in the city; that was one of the ships which was responsible for the bombardment and massacre of thousands of people who were trying to flee from Málaga to Almería.
Sánchez, who is the head of the PSOE in Málaga province, also explained that the socialist group in parliament has presented an proposal to declare the route taken by the hundreds of thousands of people who were fleeing to Almería as a Site of Democratic Memory in Spain and include it in the State inventory of historical memory sites to raise awareness in general of what happened.
